My Speech

I’m going to introduce railways in New Zealand. On the North Island, The Overlander operates between Oakland and Wellington. In the south Island, The TranzCoastal operates between Picton and Christchurch; The TranzAlpine operates between Christchurch and Greymouth, and Taieri Gorge Railway operates between Dunedin and Middlemarch. The most popular transportation is using bus, so each line has only one service in a day. The TranzAlpine is running from the east coast, crossing mountains of the Southern Alps to the west coast. The views from the window are so beautiful that it rated one of the world’s great scenic railway journeys. You can hear the announcement when the train is passing through the popular spots and historical places. Tairei Gorge Railway makes several stops at one beautiful spots, so you can take photos outside the train and walk bridge.

When Japanese people take a long distance train, they often buy “Ekibenn” and bring it to the train. But, in New Zealand, you can’t take food and drink. In the train, there is at seat service provide juices and snacks. And alcohols like beer or wine are sold in the train.

TRANSPORTATION 2

I would like to introduce about transportation in Wellington. Wellington is capital in New Zealand, but not so large. The size of center of the city is small; the best way of transportation is walk. If you want to go to the suburbs of the city, the best way is bus. Also you can take cable car and Tranz Metro. Cable car links center of the city with a botanical garden that place on the hill and Carter observatory. You can command a view of central Wellington. If you get on Tranz Metro, you can go to Wairarapa, Kapiti coast, Porirua, and so on.

Wellington is located the southern in north island, so ferry system is developed. Inter Island Ferry operates Wellington in north island to Picton in south island. It takes tree hours. It is said that the most beautiful ferry trip in the world.

TRANSPORTATION

In New Zealand, main transportations are train, bus, ferry, and taxi. “TRANZCOASTAL” and “TRANZALPINE” lines run in New Zealand. In 2003, subway and railway were opened traffic. Sometime train doesn’t come on time, but New Zealanders has mild character, so they don’t make complaint if train is late a little.

In Auckland, “Stage Coach Bus” runs from the center of city to throughout Auckland. “Link Bus” run the center of city. It doesn’t have time table, but electric bulletin boards are placed each bus stops, so you can get the information what time will next bus come. “CITY CIRCUIT” runs the center of city every day. Many people use this bus because it is free.

Many people take a taxi at a taxi stand. As characteristic of New Zealand taxi, there are many kinds. Those types of car are an ordinary car, van and so on. Basic fare is a pay-by-meter system same as Japan. The starting fare is around 2 dollars.

My Speech

I’ m going to talk about foods in Aloha Festival. Poke contest is a one of events in this festival. Poke is a traditional dish in Hawaii. Mainly fresh fish like Ahi, it is tuna fish, are used. They are cut into like square and added soy sauce, onions and so on. It is like Hawaiian Sashimi. Now Poke is developing with taking into another country’s food culture. This is a contest that we decide the number one Poke. These pictures are the number one Poke in 2005 contest.

Ho’olaule’a is a party and many kinds of food booth line a street, held Hula, and live concert. There are so many food booths like Korean food, Chinese food, and so on. Especially shaved ice and garlic shrimp are popular. Shaved ice is similar to Japan’s “Kakigoori”, but it is finer than Kakigoori. Picture’s one is rainbow flavor. Garlic shrimp is so popular that many people make a long line in front of this booth. If you go to Ho’olaule’a, you can get many kinds of food without going around everywhere.
